I have a B&D drill stand just like that, only it came painted orange. Mine is stamped "Black & Decker Horizontal Stand, Model 2, Made in England". It was purchased new as a set, along with an accompanying Drill Press rig that was designed to accept a 1/4" B&D drill clipped into the mechanism. The drill press was a very poor design as the drill was only held in place by the friction of the receiving forks grasping the ventilation slots on the sides of the drill body - nothing else to lock it in place. Anytime there was anything more than a light load on it, the torque would cause the drill would to come flying out of the press!

And yours is the improved Model 2 version! Thanks for the comment, I doubted the usefulness of the thing. I wonder how old it is, probably early sixties.

Yes, I believe it was the early sixties when my dad bought it. The bench grinder stand was not bad - if you cranked the adjuster bolt good and tight, it would hold. The drill press though, was just a plain bad idea. I just dug out the the original 1/4' B&D drill today - it still works!

I love the old aluminum powertools. As for the drillpress, remember the ol,d orange plasticB&D drill-powered bandsaws of the eighties? Seemed like a good idea at the time....

Had to comment here. I actually went looking for this thing, as well as the drill press mentioned by Steve above. I don't know about bench grinding, but I actually like using it with a wire-wheel for rust removal on smaller items. As far as the press goes, the "friction" fork for holding the drill is actually supposed to be screwed into the front housing of the drill. It's no wonder it was flying out!
