I see the inventor on that twist grip patent is 'Carl O. Hedstrom" and thought to myself "That sounds familiar". Then it hit me - the 'O' stands for 'Oscar' Hedstrom of Indian Motocycles (no R in Motocycles).
'Course, BMW twins used to feature a throttle that used a ramp and a rack/pinion and a nice little chain. Here's a drawing on that there eBay:
