Monday Mystery, Clamp

This looks like a really useful thing for... some thing... any ideas?

  1. Attaching temporary lift lugs to large sheets of ... something?

  2. A [pair of these could be used to support a round bar with or without any attachments. Maybe produced for a specific manufacturing process?

  3. Appears to be cast so I don’t think it’s used for lifting. Doesn’t seem to be industrial quality. I think it’s probably part of some kind of assembly or kit of some kind. The finish reminds me of the benchtop multi tool Unimat but I don’t recognize it as something from that tool.

  4. They show up on eBay in pairs, but nobody knows what they are. So far the only clue I've come up with is that they're used two at a time, and they're 4 inches by 4 1/2 inches so not tiny and the clamp capacity is 1 1/8 inch.

  5. Somewhere, not long ago I saw a picture perhaps from a catalog a photo of a small fishing boat with many rods being supported with clamps somewhat similar to the pictured one. Perhaps it was it was from a catalog from a company’s history referenced on this blog

  6. Hmmm, I've done searches and don't find anything like that on the blog, (of course that means little).

  7. I think it's a white metal casting, so not heavy duty.

  8. The green Hammerite finish says office equipment to me. Maybe something to do with a fancy drafting table or, as Anonymous suggests, a gizmo for holding lightweight flat stock (elevation and perspective drawings, say) for compact storage?
