Some records state that Theodore was Austrian, others indicate he was from Hungary, which appears to be more likely. However, his last country of residence, prior to coming to America, was Italy. Theodore and his family came to America around 1929-1930 and he immediately built Exact tool company. This was not Theodore’s first business venture. He owned (or at least managed) “Anonima Adda Fabbriche Italiane Strumenti Utensili”, a tool factory in Milan, Italy.

Exact Tool Company in High Bridge, NJ was one of the few businesses in the area to offer employment in significant number, and the number of employees grew substantially over time. Theodore was certainly an incredible businessman. He died 1958, his son Peter Vaida took over the business. But why did Theodore leave Italy when he already had a business there that seemed to be going well. I may have the answer!

This story is of great significance to me. When I married into the family in 1981, I discovered that they either were, or had been attending the local catholic church in Clinton, NJ, and all the children and grandchildren thought of themselves as “Catholic”. A few years later, a distant relative (who they had never met before or even known of their existence) showed up at the home of Peter Vaida and in Clinton. This relative informed the Vaida’s that they were actually Jewish and had the documents to prove it! The real family name it seems was “Feldman”. Theodore’s parents and siblings were NOT practicing Jews, but nonetheless records indicate that Theodore had experienced a number of episodes of Jewish persecution, and by his early to mid-teens started attending Catholic youth meetings. Sometime after his service in World War I, he changed his name from Feldman to Vaida and encouraged the rest of his family to do the same. Yet, on some documents from around 1930, he still used Feldman as a middle name. The fact that the family was Jewish was supposed to be a secret. We even have a quote from Theodore’s brother who claimed that Theodore said (and I’m stating this just from memory) that he would go to any length to assure that none of his children ever find out that they were Jewish!

Well, obviously they did find out that they are Jewish but, perhaps this can be a lesson to us all to be accepting of people and to appreciate the sacrifices that were made by those who came before us.
There is so much more I could tell but, I think this is enough for now.

Tom

Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13271789306442214468noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2693775542020483450.post-40025949780539217632021-10-01T16:00:52.403-04:002021-10-01T16:00:52.403-04:00Lucky find, and great you didn't just step ove...Lucky find, and great you didn't just step over it and let it rot.
