Ocean Blend Tea Company, Peterboro & Toronto, Ontario

An old tin I encountered somewhere with absolutely beautiful graphics!

While the tin places the company out of Peterboro (now Peterborough) Ontario, the web also gives a 1939 address out of Toronto:

The receipt above is taken from Our Stories, a community based history digitization project initiated by the  Innisfil Public Library

Tea was one of the first products to be packaged in metal containers, and there were many companies in this market.  For a partial listing, visit Tea History With Bins/Tins and More.

Hello Duke. I travelled with my Grandfather, Gladstone Chapin, from Peterboro north through Fenlen Falls, Bobcageon, Bancroft and other areas in the vicinity, on his tea runs. He sold tea, coffee, cocoa, pepper and other products out of the back of a 1949 Chevrolet Sedan Delivery truck in the '50s for Ocean Blend Tea co. Bert Hewey was the manager of the Peterboro office on Water Street. what an adventure for a 5 year old in the '50s. I have one rusty old tea tin in my possession, and a picture of Granddad in front of his truck. Thanks for bringing back good memories. from Ross Chapin.

  2. Ross, wonderful memories. I found an old tea tin belonging to my grandfather, made by Lipton (the competitor?!) in Toronto. Tin dates about 1930-40s with Japanese pictures on it. It sent me searching for a few more old tins to buy, to display with this one in my kitchen. To my surprise there were several Ontario facilities, Peterboro, Hamilton, London and Toronto, etc. I though it was all imported from India and England. I’m about to buy the above red tea tin on Ebay, and came across this site and your comment. Cheers.
