The welded hull eliminated the possibility of rivets breaking off inside the hull and flying around when struck by an incoming round.

 

Cast Hull

This hullcasting has no side entry, a later variant than above. That is one very large chunk of cast steel. I guess it would go on to the machining process next. I'd like to see the mill they used.
