We used to make things in this country. #128: Canadian Tube and Steel Products, Montreal, Quebec
The Canadian Tube and Steel Company was created by in 1914 by J. W. McConnell through the merger of Canadian Tube and Iron with Colonial Wire Manufacturing and Canadian Rolling Mills. McConnell was no stranger to mergers, previously having amalgamated six casket manufacturers under the umbrella of Dominion Manufacturers, literally a grave endeavour. Canadian Tube and Steel became a subsidiary of the Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation (DOSCO) in 1943. A.V. Roe Canada acquired controlling interest in DOSCO following World War II and, when AVRO Canada was dissolved in 1962, the assets were merged into the newly formed conglomerate Hawker Siddley Canada. This company was in turn dissolved in 1968 after the majority of its coal mining and steel mill industrial assets in Cape Breton were nationalized.
