Italy seemed a certain Schneider Cup winner for 1922 as no one else had entered. At the last minute Supermarine entered the contest privately and their ungainly 450 hp Sea Lion was the hands-down winner, flying the first 6 laps at 160 mph after which the pilot, being far in the lead throttled back for an average speed of 145 mph. The Italians came a distant second, their Savoia 51 sporting only 300 hp.
