J.J. McLaughlin, Toronto

John James McLaughlin came from a prestigious family--his father founded the McLaughlin Carriage Company in Oshawa, and his brother started the McLaughlin Motor Car Company in 1907, which eventually became General Motors of Canada.  J.J. graduated from the College of Pharmacy at the University of Toronto in 1885. Setting up a small carbonating plant, over a ten year period he developed the recipe for what was to become his lasting legacy: Canada Dry Pale Dry Ginger Ale.  He filed for a patent in 1905 but, sadly, died only 9 years later.

Since 2008, Canada Dry has been owned by the Texas-based Dr Pepper Snapple Group.
