Twinbody Streetcars

The Toronto Railway Company rebuilt some of their aging small streetcars into double-length units like the one above. With their height and narrow doors they were slow to load.

  1. The mistake they made was to not split the saloon and make a centre entrance/exit car like the Wellington City Tramways (NZ) double-saloon. These were really fast loaders and some did over 40 years service. Otherwise they should have ditched the nos 1 & 12 saloon windows in favour of much bigger platforms. Dunedin (NZ) City Tramways did one double-truck car called "Queen Mary" out of two 4 wheel Brill boxcars with the same result as Toronto. https://www.flickr.com/photos/minicountryman/9376681286/
