The world's first steam-powered foghorn was designed by Robert Foulis and erected on Partridge Island, New Brunswick in 1859. The story goes, he was walking home on a foggy night and noted that although he could hear his daughter was playing her piano, he could only hear the very low notes. He did not apply for a patent and although he was recognised for the invention, did not profit by it.
