The Short Type 184 seaplane was first flown in 1915 and 936 of the two seat, folding-wing reconnaissance aircraft were built. The type served for the duration of the war. Along with patrol work it was also used as a bomber and torpedo plane, and performed the first sinking of an enemy ship by aircraft-carried torpedo.
