On the level: Johnson Level & Tool Manufacturing Company

Located in Mequon, Wisconsin, the Johnson Level & Tool Mfg. Co., Inc. is the largest manufacturer of wood levels in the U.S.  It boasts that many of its tools are US made, although most of the wooden levels are now imported from Asia. The company was founded in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1947 by George A. Johnson.  Over the years, Johnson has expanded from a small wood level manufacturing company into a leading provider of tools for professional tradesman and DIY users alike. The company has more than 50 patents, examples include laser levels, hardwood levels, box beam levels, sharpeners, power tapes, closed reel fiberglass tapes, butt markers, contour gauges, board spacing tools, rafter squares and brass stair/square gauges. Along with Fuller Tools and General Tools, the company is part of the Canadian Innovak Group, headquartered in Montreal.

The company's website includes some interesting articles on the history of levels, and "Levelpedia" with information on the use and care of levels and other measuring instruments.
