The Silver Engine

Built for display at the 1867 Universal Exposition of Paris, the "America" was the showiest locomotive built by Grant Locomotive Works till that time. Her boiler and all ornate castings and fittings were plated in the finest German Silver (a copper/nickel plate), the wooden cab was a cabinetmakers delight and the tender featured oil paintings. After the show she was bought by the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific and used to make speed record mail runs between Chicago and Omaha Nebraska.
