In my neck of the woods, initial volumes ("A to Aba") of older encyclopedias often turn up at thrift stores. These were usually given away by salesmen, in the hopes that the recipient would decide to buy the entire set. Ordinarily, I can't bring myself to cut pages out of books, but these ones are so commonplace that I will slice pages out of them because the images scan better. The rest of the book is put into paper recycling. However, our township recycling program will only take hardcover books if the covers have been removed. Never one to waste anything, I burn the covers in my woodstove. I snapped this evocative photo of one volume combusting: shades of Fahrenheit 451!
Or is it the future of man.........
