The End of the Bermuda Sky Queen

In October of 1947 The Boeing 314 Bermuda Sky Queen with 62 passengers and 7 crew aboard, was flying from Shannon, Ireland headed for Gander, Nfld. It had been flying into gale-force winds for much of the trip.  Fuel was running short and despite heavy seas the pilot elected to land near the US Coast Guard cutter George M. Bibbs which was on weather duty in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Over a 24 hr period the passengers were rescued by life raft but the aircraft had been damaged in a collision with the ship (note the dented nose in the image). The aircraft was then sunk as a threat to navigation.
