Puerto Rico, U.S.A., 1983

Esquire.  How We Lived 1933-1983.  June 1983.

Puerto Rico is one of five inhabited unincorporated U.S. territories. It's a really weird political entity.  In spite of its name ("Rich Port"), economically things haven't gone well for the archipelego.  This year the debt climbed to $12,000 per capita, creating a debt crisis.

In June, Puerto Ricans get to vote on whether the country should apply to become the 51st U.S. state.
