Starting in 1964, Screaming Lord Sutch (founder of the Official Monster Raving Loony Party) started his own radio station in the Shivering Sands Army Fort, one of the abandoned Second World War Manusell Sea Forts in the Thames Estuary. The original transmitter was from a Handley-Page Halifax bomber. It's a fascinating story--see the Wikipedia entry. Today, we have Pirate Bay. Not the same.
There's a 2009 movie about this group, Pirate Radio (The Boat That Rocked), although not on the Manusell Sea Forts. I haven't seen it, but it got good reviews. For more info, visit The Real Story Behind Britain's Rock 'N' Roll Pirates.
