The "c.v." term is interesting, and a bit puzzling. As far as I can make out, 'c.v.' stands for 'cheval vapeur'; cheval = horse, vapeur = steam -- so, literally, 'horse steam'. Have I got that right? Can anyone clarify that curious term?
You're right about the literal meaning of the abbreviation. c.v. is the metric measure of horsepower, and the two types of measurements are not identical.
