Steamboat Mount Desert

The steamboat Mount Desert shown passing in front of her namesake scenic feature. Launched in 1879 at Bath Maine, the 162 foot wooden boat served in the Rockland-Bar Harbour area for a quarter century providing excellent service with very few issues.

Photographed in Bar Harbour at the landing, year unknown.

The steamer J T Morse replaced the Mount Desert and like many other obsolete Maine steamers she was sent down to Boston for a bit and then ended up running in the Long Island Sound area under the new name Arion till condemned in 1913. The old ship disintegrated slowly at Edgewater New Jersey for awhile and was broken up for scrap.
