Leon Mandel, American Cars, Stewart, Tabori and Chang 1982
The Philion Road carriage was a 1 hp 2 cylinder steam powered carriage begun in the late 1880s. The maker was a travelling showman and this vehicle was built in his spare time. It was finally patented and run in 1892. The chauffeur/engineer sat in the back and operated the steam engine, it could be steered either from the front or back. This was the only example produced and probably qualifies for the title of first American car.
