Mystery Monday, Stamp hammer



This seems to be a hammer for embossing the Crown G symbols into some material, possibly wood- in log or board form? Seems a bit odd as the hammer swing would provide little accuracy, and there is also no provision to locate the stamp and then strike with a separate hammer. Ideas?

    G and a crown presumably for King George the first? A marking hatchet to stamp the but end of the king's timbers once felled?

    Good history and it explains much more of the Broad arrow story, I'll keep it in mind but this stamp is less than an inch in diameter, doesn't seem it would be useful in a forest. Thanks!

    M.Silvius has it (almost) right, when a forestry agent marks trees to be felled in a wood, he slices off the bark at eye level with the blade, and stamps the sapwood beneath to authenticate the mark. Still current.
