One of my vices is vises, a turret vise proposal

This late 19th Century proposal for an improvement to a vise seems like it could be a useful idea in certain specialized situations, The body of the vice would hold a turret consisting of four jaw types, smooth flat, rough flat and two with V grooves. The bolt would be loosened and the turret rotated to provide the proper jaw. Good thinking, I guess... but someone came up with a simpler and stronger solution by casting V groove pipe jaws below the normal jaws which does most of what this inventor proposes.
The drawing is confused by the bolt and nut in the jaws (presumably in the vertical V groove turret jaw), being used as a hold-down for a random chunk of material.

  1. That is a strange design. So only the back jaw has the V grooves and others? The front jaw is what? Also looks like there is going to be a lot of force on that single countersunk screw holding the movable jaw and being a slot head how long until that is all buggered up. You are right the swivel head with the pipe jaws, one of which I have, is much more useful in all aspects.

  2. If he'd asked me, think I would put a dovetail in the base to hold a the main jaw. The jaw insert would be square with matching dovetail. A tap of a hammer and you could reorient the jaw. But it's probably still too complicated to be viable.
