In the 70s and early eighties, I would dump used oil into a disused ditch next to my dad's shop-so much that rain wouldn't penetrate the ground. Fast forward to present day and that spot is so full of weeds you'd scarcely believe that oil had been dumped there at all.
Still a bad idea. but not necessarily the environmental disaster we've been led to believe.
