Unlike probably most of the world, the British license plate system has the number assigned to the vehicle and the number follows the vehicle throughout its life. Not sure if it offers any advantages except it makes the vehicle's history easy to follow.
The regulations concerning the size of numbers, plate and format changed periodically of course, I believe this image covers the new 1930 rules.
