Tunnel travel


 Motor inspection tour of the Pennsylvania Railway Tunnel during its construction. The tunnel, consisting of two tubes under the Hudson River, was started in 1903 and completed in 1910. 

The automobile is unidentified. The tunnel, now called the North River Tunnels, is in more use than ever, running trains back and forth into Manhattan and is slated to be replaced in the next twenty years....

  1. The article you include is accurate, but it omits most of the significant recent history of efforts to replace/update/repair these over 100 old tunnels. What's most sad, the project was well underway, with money already allocated by two states and the Feds. But then a politician who's now on the national stage killed it by diverting the money to his pet causes, instead.

  2. What struck me was the fact that a private company, a railroad, took this massive project on. I've not looked into how it was actually funded, there had to be some government money, I'm sure...
