County Donegal Railcar #1

Jonathon Clancey, The Train, An Illustrated History, Carlton Books

The County Donegal Railway was a network of 3 foot gauge rail lines that fanned out from Londonderry, Ireland. It served small towns and remote areas from 1906 till 1960. One of the reasons the lines kept going in this poor area was by keeping costs down. This gasoline engined railcar, built by Alldays and Onions, was purchased in 1906 to provide passenger service at a much lower cost than a whole steam powered train. At some point in history, power was upgraded from 10 to 36 hp, giving it the power to pull a coach. The railcar lasted till the closure of the railway in 1959.
