If the con rods were on a common crankpin they would create a huge left-right shaking motion not the self-cancelling in and out motion of two crankpins 180 degrees from each other. I've understood the "boxer" name was given to the fact that the two pistons oppose each other in motion.

ReplyDeleteAhh yes you are correct. I somehow had forgotten that VWs and BMW motorcycles have a separate throw for each piston. I'll fix that...
