    I, diehard ignoramus, would've guessed either the International Harvester Scout or the Ford Bronco to be the first. But I'm not a car guy.

    Early to mid '80s Jeep Wagoneer. Date based on the rectangular headlights. The first ones started in the early '60s.

    No badges on it at all,I never noticed that. I made a snap decision it was a Grand Cherokee (about 1982), but I think you're right,Jeep Wagoneer!

    Building on the basic sixties Wagoneer design by Brooks Stevens, author of MANY classics including the Harley Davidson Hydra-Glide (still copied to this day in new HD's), the Evinrude Lark outboard motor, and -wait for it - the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile!

    My father drove 2 different Willy's station wagons, a '53 4cylinder 2WD and a '59 6cylinder 4WD. Way ahead of that Duxbury Cadillac that you have featured.

    I considered the Jeepster also, but the word SUV didn't pop up for another 40 odd years- The Wagoneer at least was current and then someone sent me a video of Model Ts being driven offroad. So there ya go... :-)
