John Sloan's Defiance

Pretty minor mystery, but the exterior of this gallon-sized can gives no clue as to the contents. A quick Google finds another reference to John Sloan and Co. as a grocer so that narrows it down somewhat. A quick sniff inside provided no clues.

  1. I don't know how reliable the "David Chavel Collection of Packaging and Related Advertising Memorabilia" is but they say it's a tea cannister and it does look like a tea cannister to me:

There's a round John Sloan & Co. Toronto can on ebay that is marked as containing coffee. In my memory I'm recalling round cans as coffee and rectangular as tea so it makes sense to me.

  2. I'll agree with that! The pseudo-oriental sidepanels of the can would indicate tea. Also the larger size (than coffee) container if it was loose tea... but Defiance does seem an aggressive name for a tea.

  3. I was gonna say: With a name like Defiance, it had to be scented baby powder or similar.
