We know Peugeot as a car maker, Sur Pans translates to "on sides", which likely refers to the way the jaws contact the hex on a bolt. Vana-Lion might be their branding for the usual Chrome Vanadium wrench material? All in all, an interesting find!
Peugeot Frères continues to exist today as the investment arm of the Peugeot family. They also control the Peugeot Lion trademark...before that emblem goes on anything, somebody from the Peugeot family has to give the OK.
I got all excited when I found a smoothing plane with a Peugeot Frères iron in it. Had to be something rare, right? Turns out the Peugeot brothers shipped plane irons by the shipload to Canada and they're all over the place here in MI.
Common or not, they have visual appeal that's for sure.

Very clever that the wrench engages the hex on the sides, not on the more malleable corners. Thoughts on why that didn't catch on?

It did, their called Flank Drive wrenches, both the open end and the box. Snap On makes them, somewhat different given computer designs but same idea.
