At the 1939 Worlds Fair, RCA introduced this John Vassos design for the first commercially available television. For something intended for the living room, the machine was sizeable, (40 inches tall and weighing 200 pounds). Vassos' design also had to deal with the length of the picture tube and the heat that it generated. The picture tube faced upwards and the image was reflected in a mirror in the lid. Large vents in the bottom front of the cabinet and on the top surface funneled heat out.
This was a stylish and expensive device (costing about the price of a modest car), the materials used were expensive, walnut, walnut veneer with bakelite and glass accents. More here.
