This large lump of cast iron is an ingenious device, set out in a field and connected to a well, a cow pumps its own water by pushing the paddle when it would like a drink. Apparently the critters catch on quick and it works very well.
That's really cool. Apparently they pump it by pushing with their nose.
Someone could hook it up to a beer tap to lighten the load on bartenders.
Being used to the individual drinking troughs in stables, with the noes-controlled flow, I never thought to clarify that!
This is embarrassing but until I looked at some pics I imagined they used a front hoof.
