BSA introduced the Sloper in 1927, the unusual forged backbone was introduced in 1930. The rest of the frame was made of round tubing, everything bolted in place. The backbone is almost completely hidden in the finished motorcycle.
Frames were usually brazed lug and tube, maybe the bolted-together design was a cost saving attempt. I've had the beginnings of a post on the Francis Barnett in the works for a while... another innovative but unsuccessful idea.
what could possibly go wrong with a bolt-together frame?
