1959 Cadillac


 Sorry, I want to accidently spill some wine on those dresses...err "gowns"...

    "We invite you to visit your dealer soon--with the man of the house-- and spend an hour in the passenger seat of a 1959 Cadillac ."

    Good lord! Forbid it that any woman might make solo decisions about cars, much less even drive one! I can't help but wonder which magazine(s) this ad ran in.

    Being that the Caddy in said ad is pink, I had to see when Mary Kay first started using pink Cadillacs as sales motivators. It seems that was 8 years after this ad, in 1967.
    And that led me to wondering, when did the "You've Come a Long Way, Baby" campaign for Virginia Slims cigarettes begin. Turns out that launched in 1968.
    So, apparently marketing and consumer attitudes changed between '59 and '67-'68.

  5. The ad is from National Geographic. I wonder who they thought their audience was, the women always seemed to be reclining in full length gowns, with the fashion house frequently mentioned.
