Cross Canada travel 1880s
The CPR was founded in 1881 to construct the trans-Canada railway. Before the the rail line across Northern Ontario was completed in 1885, the company ran steamboats between first Algoma Mills (near Blind River) and later Owen Sound and Port Arthur to connect with the rail line to western Canada.
The West did not include British Columbia till the CPR finished the Transcontinental Railway- also in 1885. The steamboat service continued until 1946.
