When I took my test ('69) you were expected to use the hand signals. British bikes hadn't discovered the wonderful world of indicators yet, anyway.
In the mid seventies, we were told to use hand signals even though bikes had signal lights by then. I still use them occasionally, mostly to point out that there is a human being inside that helmet and leathers.
