Sidecar Sunday

1948. That man Eric Oliver and passenger Denis Jenkinson working hard for their victory at Zandvoort.

  1. Jenkinson is wearing white shoes. It didn't hit me at first because we're used to seeing white sport shoes now, but this photo is dated 1948.
I looked up the history of tennis shoes - that's what we called 'em when I was a kid - and rubber soled canvas shoes were first developed in the 19th century for sailors to get better grip. I wonder if that's what he's wearing?

  2. Is that the same Denis Jenkinson who partnered with Stirling Moss in the 1955 Mille Miglia?

If so, I want to know which was the scarier ride.

  3. Probably so, he was born in 1920. Highly recommended is his book "The Racing Driver: The Theory and Practice of Fast Driving".
