Jenkinson is wearing white shoes. It didn't hit me at first because we're used to seeing white sport shoes now, but this photo is dated 1948. I looked up the history of tennis shoes - that's what we called 'em when I was a kid - and rubber soled canvas shoes were first developed in the 19th century for sailors to get better grip. I wonder if that's what he's wearing?

Probably so, he was born in 1920. Highly recommended is his book "The Racing Driver: The Theory and Practice of Fast Driving".
