Sailors man the yards of the USS Atlanta in honor of the visit to New York by Queen Kapiolani of the Hawaiian Islands who walks down the gangplank towards a Marine honor guard.
The Atlanta was a 283 foot Protected Cruiser built in 1884 by the John Roach & Sons shipyard in Chester Pa. and was one of the first steel ships in the US Navy. The ship was in service till 1905 when she was reduced to a barracks ship at first Norfolk, Virginia and later Charleston, South Carolina. It was scrapped in 1912.
A protected Cruiser was a late 19th century form of warship with an armoured deck at the waterline protecting the boilers and engines designed to cope with the rifled guns that were being developed. Even at that point in history, sails were still considered to be essential.
