Here we have a somewhat flimsy square made by HMM Ltd in England. it comes with a patent number- 497450, awarded to Harry Millward in December 1938 for "Improvements in or relating to mechanics and like squares". Patent here.
I've looked at that patent and there are either pieces missing or I'm missing something.
These patent squares are not uncommon in the UK. If you search eBay for "HMM square " and include sold items, you'll see some that match the patent drawings but also several plain ones, like yours. I reckon Mr Millward saw an easy way to double his range of products and puzzle old tool collectors, long after he'd stopped caring!
