It will cut a wide tongue on the edge of a board, stopping at the depth of the groove between the cutters. The opposing cutters provide increased efficiency by cutting on both the forward and backward strokes. I'm no plane history expert, but I've never seen one exactly like that. Seems too nicely done for a home-built, though.

Thnaks you , that makes sense. I thought it was too nice for home made... there are Japanese planes that sort-of look like that.
