Crescent started making the adjustable wrench as we know it in about1905 although they did not patent it till 1915. The double ended version appeared about the same time and was sold till at least 1960. I suspect they're more fun to look at than they are a useful tool.
Crescent discontinued the double ended version in 1960. Their marketing department then added their metric versions to the line in 1961.
