Yamaha triple roadracer

Mick Walker Classic Japanese Racing Motorcycles Osprey 1991

Doug Schwerma poses with the Yamaha triple he made using aircooled Yamaha twin parts. If Yamaha two stroke twins were dominating 250 and 350cc roadracing, what could be done by adding another cylinder? Mr. Schwerma was the first to do so but the cause taken up in Britain by several people, who made triples using various combinations of 250 and 350 cylinders including the SCITSU triple in 1973, before the TZ500 and TZ750s. Back in the day, CMA and AMA allowed 350 singles in the 250 GP class. At least in the great white north, 175 singles were allowed in the 125 class - remember this was the era of the TA 125 twin. So some enterprising young lad sawed the damaged side off a TZ350 barrel, refitted the rest of the water jacket, mounted it on a Sachs 125 7-speed crankcase, etc, etc.

Once properly set up, it was very hard to beat. Still sits in the back of a garage, last I heard.
