I wondered about the occupant of the trackside chair until I glimpsed his rapid departure in the linked video. Good placement of the fire suppression equipment. The car almost self-administered the extinguisher.
AVUS was not the circuit to have a total brake failure - he went straight on and clipped the haybales, which launched the BRM into orbit. It must have been a surreal moment to be on the track and watching your car barrel rolling away from you.

I've seen a few pictures of "driver in the air beside his tumbling car", Hans was lucky- he seemed to live an eventful life...
