Built in 1969 by Troutman-Barnes for the Southern California VW distributor. I wonder if it's still around, people care for this sort of car.
Troutman-Barnes were established custom car builders in Culver City, California, having built bodies for several Chapparal race cars and the Mustang I show car for the Ford Motor Company in 1962.

I sure do love it, a whole lot. If'n it were MY fancy schmancy VW black limozeen with beautiful chrome wheels and caps and tires... I would make it into a tiny micro camper. install a slide open roof top for a pop-UP shower made out of clear vinyl roll sheet 80 Gauge. toilet where pASSenger seat is. install addition vent fan and air freshener pine tree around the rear view mirror, thank you. the motor can be removed and thrown on top of an old tire out in the backyard wrapped and buggies in a tarp. the dollar china family store tarp will be UV damaged in one year cracking and shedding and flaking away allowing all the snow and mosquito rain and dirt and rust and bugs and snakes in it........doesn't matter because you replaced the motor with a Porsche motor all chromed and polished. won't need a motel room at the BIG VW event.

Was it built for VW of America's Carl Hahn of Englewood Cliffs, NJ, or Competition Motors John Van Newman of Culver City, California?
Troutman and Barnes built more then a few bodies for Jim Hall's Chaparral Cars in 1961, they actually designed and built the first Chaparral 1. More cars were built and raced by Hall's partner Hap Sharp and Harry Heuer's Meister Brauser Team.
A terrific new read is "Texas Legend Jim Hall and his Chaparrals" by George Levy. Anyone who had the pleasure of attending USRRC sports car races of the late 50's and early 60's and the Cam-Am Cup races of the 60's and 70's can almost hear the thunder of 25 big blocks.
Thank you for that information, I found they had built therir frst race/sports car in 1951 and then was a small mention of the first couple of Chapparals, glad to get more of the story! My guess is that it stayed on the west coast, as the link above mentions John Wayne. (If it is the same vehicle. No word if they built more than 1)
