I see the inventor on that twist grip patent is 'Carl O. Hedstrom" and thought to myself "That sounds familiar". Then it hit me - the 'O' stands for 'Oscar' Hedstrom of Indian Motocycles (no R in Motocycles).

I used to have CD175s as my default bike (the 1970s ones); they also had the in-handlebar groove and slide thingy. D.
They made sure you had to buy a factory handlebar. Or we just rode with bent bars :-)
