Silk engine section view


 The Silk motorcycle was based on the long running water cooled two stroke Scott Flying Squirrel. Unfortunately, it was in production for only 4 years, ending in 1979. I had no luck finding a Scott engine section view for comparison. 
Update; I've added images of a disassembled Silk engine and the left side of the engine. (Thanks Jon!)

Also below; added a couple exploded Scott engine drawings. showing the overhung crank throws, and the dual chain primary drive. 





   1925 500 cc 2 stroke Scott Super Squirrel engine, showing the overhung crankwheels and the drive for the Best and Lloyd oil pump. The circular crankcase access doors could be removed to access the big end bearings.

Much more beautiful drawing than I could ever accomplish , so I'm a bit hesitant to criticize, but what does the LH cylinder do over there hanging outside of the primary drive. Silk seems to have engaged the M. C. Escher engineering firm to design needed updates to the original Scott engine.

It looks to me like that chain drive is in the center of the crankshaft with a cylinder on either side of it. Maybe my eyeballs are skewed.

It is a bit confusing, isn't it? I'm trying to find out more information. More as I find out more!

Yes, there does seem to be a dearth of Scott engine internal images available. But I was able to glean that the primary drive is indeed by dual row chain from the center of the engine and both connecting rods are overhung with no outboard main bearings. So the illustration is not faulty: the LH cylinder is 'hanging out in the breeze' so to speak.

Updated again thanks to information from Jon. Some more engine views and some Scott engine drawings for comparison. I'd say the Silk does show some Scott influence but with a more conventional crankshaft configuration.
