Archer Tapper No2

Reversing tap driver for a drill press. I've never used one, but as I understand it, lowering the drill press spindle engages a clutch and then, threading done, lifting the spindle activates a reversing action to withdraw the tap. Good for production in controlled circumstances and spindle speeds. I don't know if I could trust myself with this device, I can break taps turning them by hand.

The thing about a tapping head though is it has a clutch, and your arms don't. When the tap binds, the tap stops turning so they tend not to break all that often. Machine taps are different than hand taps too; they have a bit of a spiral. But you can still use standard taps in a tapping head.

When I worked at Holo-Krome I worked with a plant machinist who tapped holes (beautifully) with a tap chucked in a hand drill. I suppose that took some practice.

Where is this place? Looks like my kind of store

This was found at Cardon’s in Perth Ontario. Truly a toy store for anyone who likes tools and mechanical projects.

The Cardon website is a treat to browse through. They obviously enjoy their work.

My old work had a tap-matic on one of the heads of the 4-head drill. It was easy to use; you could back it off and then back on again if it wouldn't tap through.
