This unopened (can we call it vintage?) model kit was sitting on the bargain shelf at the local hobby shop. It's definitely not in the casual purchase category at $195 but when was the last time you saw one? Remember the full page ads in Cycle World magazine?

I spent an ungodly sum in 1973 USD to buy a Protar BMW Rennsport. Holy cats what a fine model, well worth the price. Its little crankshaft propelled rods and pistons (a meager droplet of 3 in 1 oil was indicated in the places you'd expect). But if you glued the front engine cover on, as it seemed you were meant to do, no one would ever know your model contained rotating innards. Perverse!
The suspension worked, I forget what else -- cables, fuel lines, plug wires, all present. I believe the company was cofounded by the racer and national hero Tarquinio Provini, who had crashed in a career-terminating way.
