The BMW R75 combination remained a major service type for the German army during the whole of World War II, although its reconnaissance function was eventually taken over by the Volkswagen Kubelwagen. The illustration above shows the combination in the colours of the Afrika Corps in the Western Desert in 1942. The gunner is shown holding a canvas cover over the breech of the MG 34 machine gun, necessary to keep the sand out of the mechanism.
